RANTING AND RAVING ABOUT GUN STUFF

Alright, so everyone has their views about guns, gun control (BS Laws), etc.  Well, they get them out to the public somehow, so here is my own effort:

I have never seen a gun fly into a criminals hand on its own, then aim itself at an innocent person, and then take aim by itself, pull it’s own trigger, and shoot them, fatally or otherwise.  Have you?

So WTF?

Don’t people study American History any more?

The Revolutionary war began being fought by militia-men, who brought their own guns, and who didn’t need permission from the government to own them.  Yes they were single shot.  But remember, except for gatlin’ guns, which a man couldn’t carry, these single shot rifles were state of the art at the time.  As good as any “King’s Man” musket.

So it was people like you and me, who own “state of the art for OUR time” guns, who fought the war that freed our nation from the grip of Great Britain and King George.

People, guns are NOT the dang problem.  The problem is irresponsibility in the homes of so many people who have children whom they choose not to raise in a befitting manner.

There’s two working parents (economical issue), and little Johnny or Jessica is left unsupervised, possibly able to play “on the street.”  Well who in the heck do you think gangs and other criminals recruit.  “Hey kid, you wanna make some money?”  Of course there are human traffic people and a bunch of other demented people out there, but you get the idea.

Johnny, age 16, who has been “on the street” since childhood, sees his buddy driving a Caddy through the neighborhood, and he wants one too.  So he goes to his buddy to find out how he got it.  BOOM!  Criminal made.  Drugs, theft, robbery, etc.   Yep, you can have a “Caddy” too Johnny.  AND with the bonus of not having to actually work at a REAL friggin job to get it.  Go American parents.

Blame it on guns when Johnny gets one from his gang-bangin’ friend, illegally by the way, and shoots a store clerk during a robbery.

NOW, let’s say I am in the store, legally armed, and stop Johnny with a round or two, but fatally wound him.  I now have to go through the criminal and civil courts just to justify saving the clerk’s life, and I didn’t do a damn thing illegal.  Go figure.  Must be the guns.  Doesn’t have anything at all to do with family values, morals, ethics, or even just simple logic.  Nope, my gun jumped out of my holster, all by itself, into my hand, took perfect aim, fired, and killed Johnny, but GUNS are to blame?  How bout Johnny’s parents who weren’t ever involved in raising him any more than hopefully making sure he had food and clothes, at best.

Who is the victim here?  Johnny

Who/what is the culprit??  Guns?  Johnny could have had a knife, and I could have been unarmed….then what?  Who, really, is the culprit?  Anyone ever consider the youth of our country are going to Hell on a train we are fueling with greed?

How Many Shots Are NECESSARY to Stop a Lethal Threat?

So What Will The Jury Say?

Let’s say that the worst happens, and you are FORCED to fire…

Further, let’s say you absolutely have made the right decision in doing so (I pray that is the case!)

In Ohio, one is permitted to fire enough rounds, and only enough rounds, to STOP the threat.

How many rounds do you suppose that might actually be?

Personally (and this is NOT legal or other advice), I was trained in the military, with rifle or pistol, to fire 3 shots to center-mass, and am pretty sure that if my “fight or flight” reflex kicks in, that is how I would still respond to a lethal threat, given there’s NO other way around it.  But, wonder what a jury would have to say about that?

Why not just one shot?  Or two?  Why idd it have to be three? — they may very well ask such a question.

MY response would simply be that it was a result of military training.  However, is that gonna fly?  Will I lose my “self-defense” defense in court?  If so, how is that ok?

I’ve been thinking about this a whole lot, and am concerned about the topic is why I wrote this post.

It is my personal opinion that, when someone’s amygdala (that fight or flight part of the brain) takes over, and there’s a HUGE adrenaline rush, I may actually even empty my magazine and reload just to be sure.   Will that land me in jail I wonder?

If YOU were a juror, how many rounds would you consider a “fair” amount to stop a threat with a gun in THEIR hand(s)?

Just curious as to what people might think about this particular question.  I reckon I’ll just have to decide for myself, and train accordingly.  How about you?

A Poor Parts Combo for the Glock 27

Okies a, I’ve been changing parts and stuff on my G27 again.  This time I put in a 3.5lb connector (trigger connector for those who may not understand what I’m saying).

Thing is, the last part change was from the stock to a 21lb recoil spring, wherein I was warned about jams with that sort of spring with “regular” (meaning not +P) ammo, which didn’t happen initially.

So, last night I installed a “Ghost Rocket Connector, 3.5lbs” for my trigger pull weight to be 3.5lbs.

Took it to the range today to check it out.

I noticed two things.

The first prominent issue was that I couldn’t fire at a rate higher than about a round per second without a jam.

The second thing I noticed (or didn’t notice), was that there was no felt change in the trigger pull, crispness, or reset.

Now, I blame the jams on two things.

One, the heavy recoil spring with factory ammo, as I was warned about by the glockstore.com

Two, I had put a reasonable (but not too heavy) amount of Brownell’s Action Lube on my slide rails and ALL moving parts of my pistol.  So, whereas last time I fired, the slide was not cycling as quickly, hence no jams, even with the heavier spring, but this time, with the heavier spring still installed, and the ability to squeeze the trigger more quickly due to the connector change, I believe that the slide was just cycling back too fast to grab & feed the cartridges.

My solution is this:

At the range, I will continue to use the lighter trigger connector, but will use the factory recoil spring.

When carrying my +P ammo, I will use the heavier recoil spring.  HOWEVER, I DO need to get some more Zombie Max rounds and test them rapid fire with the heavy spring and with the factory spring to compare.  I’m pretty certain that the +P ammo will function fine in the pistol the way it is….but next time I shoot factory ammo at the range, I WILL put in the factory recoil spring (unless I decide on a less heavy one that is still  heavier than “factory”).

This is why we test fire after changing parts!  We MUST be certain our firearm is working at tip-top shape if we are to rely on it to protect our lives or the lives of those we love!!!

Peace Ya All

Aha! Got that G27 Heavy Spring to Gimme a Jam!

Okies, went to the range again today….took the Glock 27, with the new 21lb recoil spring I used last time with no issue.

Had no issue today…until….

Pay close attention….

TRIPLE TAPS!  Was using Remington 180gr, FNFMJ Ammo (UMC Factory Stuff)….and as long as I  was on double-taps it was fine.  But I did a few rounds of triple-taps at the silhouette (the one I totally mangled the center of mass out of ), and then, and ONLY then, did I experience any jams at all, And, they actually were not stove pipes, but rather – feed jams.  This surprised me cuz I had lubed up the slide rails and everything else with some super duper stuff from Brownell’s, whose name I don’t recall at the moment, but my “gun guy” recommended it highly.  I’ll post the name later….don’t feel like going downstairs to look at present.

So, the 21lb recoil spring I bought from Glockstore.com, DID apparently cause a few jams.  However, NOT the stove-pipe jams I was warned about, but FEED jams…almost like the cartridge was “sticking” to the feed ramp.  A bit odd I thought, as I was shooting with both hands and definitely NOT “limp-wristing” the shots.  I was only loading 8 rounds per magazine.  Out of each, I took the first shot well aimed, then two double-taps for a total of 5, then the remaining 3 as triple-taps.  Accuracy was friggin outstanding, but I DID actually get 2 jams out of around, heck, I don’t know, say 90 rounds.

Now, I would estimate that had I been firing ALL +P ammo, there would have been ZERO jams….but am not sure yet, and need to test a few boxes of +P.  I’m just too cheap to buy more.  I carry Hornady Zombie rounds in it daily, but I sure as heck don’t shoot them at the range on a regular basis at near $1/rd !!  But, just for the sake of testing, and for my own satisfaction, I will buy some more quick as I can find them, and take them to the range….SOLELY so I can report back here on this “jam” issue the glockstore warned me about….the one I can’t get to happen.  Oh, just FYI, I am definitely NOT knocking the glockstore.com sales people on this!!!!!   I love that store, and they definitely know WTH they are talking about.  I’m just testing their theory in my own personal shooting practice is all.  Naw, glockstore dot com totally ROCKS!

Wednesday, I’m also installing a 3.5lb trigger connector (& some SS assy pins), so we’ll see if that trigger will change anything as well while I’m at the range any dang way LOL.  Oh, btw, if you are in Dayton and already have a CHL/CCW Permit, there is a LEGAL UPDATE CLASS on Feb. 26, 2014 from 5:30pm-9:30pm.  Keep that sort of stuff up to date in your head!!!  Don’t want to carry illegally anywhere, and ESPECIALLY DON’T WANT TO MAKE A BAD SHOOTING CALL!!!!!

For now, ya all take care!

Peace Out!  Carry proud, you’re an American exercising your civil right to do so, and if you don’t fight to maintain that right, you will eventually lose it (and then another, and then another….)

Decision on Reloading Press Made!

Didn’t Take Long to Make a Decision…

I’ve decided on the reloading press I want!  Yay!  The decision I made is based on advice from a relative who does a lot, and I mean a LOT, of reloading for various calibers of pistol and rifle.

Tada!  Here we go with the Dillon Precision’s RL550B Progressive Reloading Press.

Of course there are a “few” accessories I will be wanting to buy, but that is pretty irrelevant.

WHY DID I DECIDE ON THIS?

One simple word:  VOLUME!   I estimate that I will be reloading a minimum of 400 rounds per month, and a potential maximum of at least twice that many.

What will I be reloading?

First and foremost, I will want to work up a load in 9mm for a custom Glock 35 straight from the Glock Custom Shop next Spring.  Secondly, there is the .40 S&W rounds I will be loading in “typical” and +P. Third, there is my sweet .308 Win rifle.  That is actually my absolute favorite gun to shoot, but I do not intend to do rifle competition, whereas with the 9mm pistol, I do.

Therefore I will need 3 die sets to begin.  They are not that expensive, and should last forever, as should this press.

Where?

TBD – Need to determine how to make space in the garage for a bench to do this, and for safe storage of components.  Naturally I would prefer to set up in the family room right in front of the TV, but we all know how impractical that is, at least for a married man lol.

Okay.  This is the latest in my reloading decision process.  I realize that it is probably of little interest to many, many people, but I wanted to talk about it anyway, so there we go!

Regards,

~S~

Decision Made = RELOAD

I HAVE DECIDED TO RELOAD!!!

Based on the info in this video by “Hickok45” on YouTube, I have decided to go ahead and reload.  I figure I’m going to be doing enough shooting to justify it.  Also, have decided on a progressive press.  Want a Dillon Precision if I can find one available to buy! LOL.

Anyway, if you are questioning whether or not to reload, check out “Hickok45” in this video:

Will keep everyone up to date on this journey.  I am familiar with reloading, as I used to do it with a hand-press by Lee for 30-30 rifle cartridges….that was interesting and cool, but ohhhh so slow.

Any further input on reloading is welcome here.  Comment away! 😀

To reload or not to reload….

Okies, let’s get right down to business.  I currently have a .40S&W, and am buying about $150/month on factory ammo…

I’m going to purchase a 9mm for NRA competition type shooting.  Have NO idea as to the power factor requirements for that, or if I should approach the low end or the “hot” end for competition.

Thinking about getting either an RCSB or DILLON PRECiSION single stage press (I do NOT want a progressive because I will want TOTAL control of powder measure and everything else).  I pretty much realize that in the long run reloading will be cheaper for me given that I’ll be a high volume shooter.

Also, I shoot VERY long range with a .308.  So I would indeed like to work up an optimal load for that.  Match grade ammo is the only ammo I find remotely acceptable off-the-shelf, so now we’re talking about two pistol calibers and one rifle, and that’s a minimum at this point, because I intend to purchase a few more “range toys” lol.

Question is this:  RCSB or DILLON??

My most recent advice, from a guy that does 500-800 yard prairie dog shooting, is DILLON, but that’s rifle, while I’m talking about precision loading 9mm on a VERY regular basis.

Anyone have recommendations?

Also, I know I need the press and die sets for each caliber, but can anyone give me a recommended (with brand) list of the other stuff for PRECISION, round by round, to the 1/100 gr (or smaller tolerance) for 9mm pistol reloading?  What’s the best powder scale?  Who makes the best bullets?  Who makes the best powder?  Used to be Hodgon(sp?), but are there others that are any better?  What about all the other stuff?

ALL INPUT IS WELCOME ON THIS!!  (That includes advice, not just comments).

Thanks a ton!

Match Grade .40 S&W Ammunition?

What do you think is the very best match grade ammo for .40 S&W?

horizlinebrn

January 26, 2014.  0511HRS:

Recently, I have been using Winchester FN FMJ, 165gr ammunition in my Glock 27 for target shooting practice.  It does well, but I have to wonder if there is some true, match grade ammo out there in .40 S&W that I just haven’t seen yet?

Any suggestions?  What would YOU use for competition ammo?  NO RELOAD information please.  I do not reload, and do not intend to reload for competition stuff.  Maybe I should?  What do YOU think?

Would like input from people who actually use a .40 Pistol…

If you look at my shooting log page, you will see the sort of results I am currently getting.  Granted, some of that has to do with me, some of it with the small frame of my G27 (muzzle jump) that has not yet been modified.  And it isn’t my eyes.  I see quite well with my glasses on, and use the “Over the Eyeglasses,” clear safety glasses when I shoot.

I’ve been firing between 104-200 rounds a week for practice, and shooting at different distances, as well as shooting one handed (strong and weak side), and of course two handed.

I have a HUGE wish-list at the GlockStore of accurizing parts, and hopefully the modifications I intend to do will be of help.  I think they will.  I’m going to put a Lone Wolf threaded barrel and compensator on, as well as a 3.5lb trigger connector, a titanium striker, and a titanium plunger.  Also going to do the heavy, competition type magwells to give the gun a little more weight and potentially a more firm and steady grip.  Also going to put the heaviest recoil spring they make on the thing!

Regardless of those factors, I want to be sure my ammo is the best I can purchase for competition purposes. I need to be shooting 2-4 inch groups at 50 yards, and right now I’m shooting closer to 5 inch groups at 40 feet…..so “I” need some work, and I want to ensure the pistol is tuned up as well as I can get it .  I really believe the longer, threaded/compensated barrel will make a huge difference, as well as a decreased trigger pull weight and some other mods.

Guess what I’m trying to say is that I do NOT want my pistol OR my ammo to be limiting factors in my accuracy.  The ONLY factor I want to have to deal with is ME.  I mean, I want the pistol to have the capability to shoot better than I am able to shoot.  Don’t want equipment or ammo issues holding ME back!

Any and all input on this matter is very welcome!

Thanks and have a blessed Day!

I recant my previous Welcoming of Anti-Gun Dialogue

Anti-Gun Crowd is FULL of (Black)Racists and Idiots

After a few months of looking at sites like:   http://www.theobamacrat.com , and others, I have determined that I can safely say there is just no room for dialogue with the Anti-Gun Activists.  THEY do NOT want to talk about compromise at all.  They just want to talk, be heard, and for the government to follow their ideals in passing even more restrictions on guns and gun ownership, as well as concealed-carry laws.

Trust me, I’ve done plenty of research, and I have yet to find ONE anti-gun person or group on the Web that has any interest in talking sensibly about gun laws.  They just do NOT want to hear from anyone who even slightly opposes their views.  And my oh my, if you tell them you are an NRA member (like me and probably most of those reading this), they completely shut off their ears.

So, because of this bad experience with all the anti-gun people I have encountered during intense research over the past six weeks+, I have deleted a post in which I made a suggestion regarding a few modifications to our current gun laws.

I sincerely regret trying to talk with these people.  They are close-minded, rude, sometimes racist against white guys like me, and immovable in their overly staunch views.  Therefore, I will no longer attempt to have a conversation with anyone who is anti-gun.  I will “moderate out” any posts by such people, especially “JB” from The Obamacrat, who clearly called me a fascist, racist, etc., and went so far as to tell me to “go suck a ……”

I’ve been courteous, gracious, and nothing but classy to ALL who have been to this site.  NO MORE.

Anti-gunners are nothing but would be socialists who would have no problem living in a United States where ONLY the Police and Military have guns.  Long, long ago, I recall reading in an “American Rifleman” magazine that, “A state in which only the Police have guns, is a Police State.”

That’s not the Proud Gun Heritage of which I am a part, and it is certainly not the type of society we Americans want!

I am so very sorry about the people who have unnecessarily lost their lives to gun violence.  However, that is why I carry mine…I refuse to be a victim.  No, I’m not looking for a reason to shoot or kill someone else.  That is FAR from the mindset I have. I will be damned if I forsake my roots or give up my guns for these people, and leave myself and my family unprotected.  And we would be unprotected.  I assure you that I, and many, many people like me, are able to respond to the threat of lethal force MUCH faster than even the best Police Officer can be dispatched and save our collective rumps.

SUMMARY:  I do not wish to give up ANY of my current gun rights.  I do, however, wish the laws to be loosened more than a little so that I can enjoy MORE gun rights.  I shouldn’t have to jump through hoops just to prove to the world that I’m an honest American citizen.  My driver’s license, and a background check should be suffiicient to purchase any gun I wish.  NO MORE GUN LAWS!  We have ENOUGH!

I’m personally sorry for the school, theater, and other mass killing victims and their families, but damn it, I did not do it!  In most cases, the idiots who perpetrate such crimes got their guns from other idiots who either just flat let them have the gun(s), or from other idiots who didn’t store them properly so as to prevent psychopaths from getting to them.

As a retired soldier, and as a law-abiding citizen, I should not be punished for the acts of idiots.  Punish the dang idiots who commit the crimes, and the people who were complicit in allowing their guns to be used for such crimes.   “I ain’t the One!”

Further, it is my opinion that any citizen, in any state in the country, who can pass a background check and an NRA approved pistol class, should be licensed to carry a concealed weapon (pistol/revolver), and that license should be valid in EVERY STATE IN AMERICA.  PERIOD.

As for me, I am disabled  and my pistol is my ONLY protection against physical violence.  Are you Anti-Gun people going to tell me I just have to take a bullet because concealed carry is not my right?  I’ve got just two words for ya all:  BITE ME!

In addition, shooting sports should be part of High School requirements in the USA. Every person over the age of twelve should be trained in the use of shotgun, rifle, and pistol — of course by qualified “teachers,” such as NRA qualified instructors.  Have you Anti-Gunners ever seen the people in the Olympics doing their rifle shooting?  Shooting IS a sport.  Will you outlaw footballs next?  Or better yet, basketballs?  No one seems to take issue with NBA players making MILLIONS for playing a game, yet they have an issue with me PAYING to participate in MY sport of choice?  Please.

Upon graduation, and upon attaining the age of eighteen, those who successfully complete their course requirements should be eligible to apply for a concealed carry license.  At 17, I was enlisted in the USAFR, and could be called up to use a firearm, but you’re going to tell me that while I was 18 in the military that I should not have had the right to purchase a handgun?  That is ludicrous!

I’m only 44 years old, and I recall looking at rifles and shotguns in the “Sears” catalog.  I didn’t buy one and go kill others at random.  Neither did anyone I knew at that young age.  As a matter of fact, all the local hardware stores, “Murphy Marts,” Sears, etc., sold guns.  Why not?  Guns ARE tools.  WE use them for hunting (food, you know), for target shooting, and myriad other events that are awesomely fun in which to participate.

The problem is DEFINITELY NOT THE GUNS.  The real problem is our society’s lack of ability to properly care for and raise children.  Families are almost forced to have two working parents in our country now just to have a house, maybe a good car and maybe a “beater”, and to get by at the grocery store.  Maybe we should legislate parenting?  Perhaps there needs to be a change deeper in our ethics and morals?  Perhaps ALL adults should ensure ALL firearms in the home are NOT accessible to our kids?  Ya think?

As for those who succeed in unnecessarily (i.e., not self-defense) killing another with a gun, make it a mandatory, MINIMUM twenty-five year federal prison sentence!  If a citizen over age 18 (or who is to be tried as an adult), is violent enough to kill innocent children or others, then send them up to the Federal Prisons with the big boys, and we’ll see how their silly selves fare then.  Heck, for that matter, if someone shoots and kills another “just for the heck of it” (research gang violence if you are clueless here) vs. self-defense, make it a death sentence!  I am sure that as a CCW holder that I will never kill without it being a “kill or BE killed situation,” and am willing to make sure I can prove a case of self-defense.  Personally, as a gun owner and an NRA member, I value human life.  It is sacred, and I am a man of honor, integrity, and morals…an upright, law abiding citizen, etc., etc., etc., and the very LAST thing I EVER wish to do is to shoot another human being.  I would much prefer to punch holes in paper with my pistol during a competition, than to hurt or kill another person.

There are MANY like me. We will NOT be silenced!

That’s all I have to say right now.

Good evening.  May God be with you, and His blessings be upon you.
